Adding a PIN onto a FIDO2 security key on a Windows system

PIN codes on your FIDO keys can be set after first launching the windows setting home page then selecting your sign-in options;

  • Open up the windows settings home page (press windows and "I" keys at the same time);

    In the left hand column, select "Accounts" to open the user accounts settings;


    Scroll down the right hand column to the "Accounts Settings" section, then select "Sign-in Options";


    In the section "Security key", click on the "Manage" button;


    You will now be presented with Sign-In options that are available for your FIDO security key.



In the section "Security key", click on the "Manage" button;


A new window titled "Windows Hello setup" will now open, insert you Fido2 key into a USB port, then touch the security key.


Touch the flashing button on the FIDO key and you will be ready to manage the Fido key settings.

After touching the FIDO key you will be presented with the windows hello Fido key management options, and if you are managing a FIDO key that has yet to be previously registered , then you will be presented with an option to add a PIN to the key

Click on the "Add" button to add a PIN;


The required PIN code can now be added to the Fido key by entering the required code into the boxes indicated below (at least 4 characters);


Enter the code into both boxes then click "OK" to update the FIDO key with the required PIN code.

Adding a PIN onto a FIDO2 security key on MacOS and Linux systems

For Mac and Linux systems it is possible to add a PIN using a tool that is built into the latest version of the Chrome browser.

This tool is available in the latest Chrome browser in macOS and Linux core system.

Users can find this tool in “Chrome Settings” => “Privacy and security” => “Manage security keys” . This tool provides the capability to manage PIN, fingerprint and credentials inside the security key and reset the device.
